Towing a trailer or caravan from Autumn 2021

On the 10th of September the government announced plan to help tackle the shortage of lorry drivers, creating the opportunity to conduct an extra 50,000 lorry tests. One way in which they have developed this opportunity is creating new rules for those towing a trailer or caravan with your car and it is important to understand how these changes will affect you.

Current towing rules

Presently, those who passed their driving test prior to 1st January 1997, can drive a vehicle and trailer combination with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 8.250kg. Those who passed their car test after this date can drive either; a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (up to 4,250kg in total) or a trailer over 750kg MAM, if it is no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500kg in total). In order to tow anything above this weight, you would have currently been required to undertake a DVSA B+E test to gain the additional licence category.

What do these changes mean?

As of the 20th of September 2021, car and trailer driving tests will cease however the exact date as to when the law will change has not currently been confirmed. Once the change of law comes into effect, those who do not currently have the relevant category will have their DVLA records updated which will show you can tow up to 3,500kgs MAM. Although the government have confirmed this change is taking place it is important that you continue to follow current rules on towing based on when you passed to ensure you do not receive any penalties which could be a fine up to £1,000 or a driving ban and up to 6 penalty points. Your licence will be updated when you get a new photocard driving licence.

Concerned about towing a trailer for the first time?

Doing something for the first time can be rather nerve-racking, particularly if you are not confident and do not have any prior knowledge or experience. The DVSA recommend those towing a trailer for the first time seek the guidance of a trained driving instructor and receive training to ensure you are towing safely and securely. Whilst this can open new doors and opportunities for people, towing a caravan in particular requires knowledge and skills and although this could be an exciting thought – safety must always come first and foremost after all, it may not just be you in the car!

Logistics Training Services LTD have been delivering B+E training for over 4 years with much success and have experienced and friendly instructors who can provide the skills and knowledge to support you to become a competent and confident driver when towing a caravan or trailer. We can tailor the training to you, focusing on areas which you feel least confident with and work around your schedule. Contact our sales team to discuss what we can do for you.
