What is Driver CPC?

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) was developed by the European Union and is a qualification which all HGV, bus or coach drivers are required to have when driving professionally.

Driver CPC was developed to improve and uphold standards of driving and road safety and ensures professional drivers are up to date with all health, safety and legal requirements. Driving professional without CPC is illegal and drivers can be fined for driving without it.

Which CPC training do I need?

There are two types of Driver CPC – Initial Driver CPC & Driver CPC Periodic Training.

New drivers who are undertaking HGV or PCV training and entering the profession, driving for hire or reward, will be required to complete initial Driver CPC: Driver CPC Module 2 Case Studies, Driver CPC Module 4 Practical Demonstration. Once both elements are passed, new drivers will obtain a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), also known as a CPC card.

Periodic training is for drivers who have already obtained their DQC card. Professional drivers are required by law to maintain this by attending 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Periodic training can be completed all in one week or split into single days over the 5-year period.

For more information on Driver CPC Periodic Training or current available dates we have a dedicated page.

Driver CPC Module 2: Case Studies

The Case Studies test is carried out on a computer and you have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete it. You will be given 7 case studies of real-life situations a HGV/PCV driver is likely to come across and will be asked 6-8 multiple choice question on each case study. The maximum score you can achieve in this test is 50 with the minimum being 40.

In order to pass the case studies test you will need to put in the work beforehand, practising and revising as much as possible. Logistics Training Services partner with Driving Theory 4 all which is an online learning portal where you will have access to 50 case studies and is designed to give you the insight of what to expect on the day of your test. The portal allows you to access the learning on a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone giving you the opportunity to study anywhere.

Driver CPC Module 4: Practical Demonstration

You must have passed the Driver CPC Module 2: Case Studies before you can complete this practical demonstration.

The practical demonstration consists of 5 topics from the Driver CPC Syllabus and you can score up to 20 points in each topic area. In order to pass you must score at least 80 out 100.

To complete the practical demonstration, you will be required to undertake a ‘Show me, tell me’ test showing various operations of a HGV driver. The test will take approximately 20-30 minutes and you will be tested on your ability on:

The test is a practical demonstration of safety checks during which you will be asked questions by your examiner in the above areas to demonstrate and show your understanding & knowledge of the legalities of driving a HGV.

Your instructor will work with you beforehand to ensure that you have the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to complete the test. We also provide an additional support document alongside our video guide of the walk round vehicle safety checks. The Driver CPC Module 4 test is conducted by our DVSA approved assessor, and the assessment is completed on our site therefore we can guide you through the process from start to finish.
