In our latest blog, we explained the changes being made to HGV licenses and tests due to the confusion surrounding the Government’s announcements. On the 29th of November 2021, there were additional changes made which impacted the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) part 3 (driving ability) test. This test is one part of the four tests required to be passed in order to drive a lorry for a living.
Previously, the DCPC part 3 test consisted of two key aspects, off-road exercises, and on-road driving. However, the changes mean the driving ability test has now been partitioned into two tests. When taking your test, you will now be required to take this in two parts: Driver CPC part 3a test: off-road exercises & Driver CPC part 3b test: on-road driving. Both tests can be booked by you or your training provider, however, you cannot take part 3B until you have passed 3A.
The Driver CPC part 3A: off-road exercises test lasts up to 30 minutes and includes an ‘S-shaped reverse into a bay and the completion of the coupling & uncoupling procedure if taking the test with a trailer. This part of the test can be booked and undertaken with the DVSA or an approved test provider. Find an approved test provider near you by clicking here.
The Driver CPC part 3B: on-road driving test includes vehicle safety questions and an hour of practical road driving. This must be taken with a vehicle from the same vehicle category as the 3A test and cannot be completed unless you have passed the 3A test beforehand.
Both tests require you to take with you your Driver CPC part 1 test: theory test pass certificate (Multiple Choice & Hazard Perception) and photocard driving license. Your 3A pass certificate must also be present when taking the 3B part of the test.
Please remember to check current government guidance regarding COVID-19 procedures, check with your instructor or ask your training provider to prevent any tests from being canceled by the DVSA.
