Getting your HGV licence

Low-cost, high-quality training leading to a long & rewarding career

HGV stands for ‘heavy goods vehicle’ and refers to commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. When beginning your training journey, it is important to understand what commercial licence you are looking for.

Logistics Training Services deliver HGV training on the two primary licence categories.

Beginning your training

Anyone wanting to start their journey towards gaining their HGV licence must:

Legal Age Requirement.

You must be 18 years old and hold a valid UK car driving licence.

Valid Full UK Driving Licence.

You will need a valid car licence to make sure you’re road safe already.

Our sales and administration team can guide you through all aspects of your HGV training including booking your driver medical to scheduling your practical training & tests. The whole process can take approximately 15 weeks from applying for your provisional licence to passing your HGV practical driving test.

Here is a step-by-step guide for the HGV training process:

Before you can apply for a provisional licence, the law requires you to undertake a driver medical. During the medical, a doctor will fill out a D4 form. D4 forms can be collected from your local post office or ordered online here.

For more information about the driver medical click here.

You must send the completed D2 & D4 forms along with your photocard driving licence to: DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BR.

You will need to fill out a D2 form which can be collected from your local post office or ordered online here.  Here you can apply for the licence category. Depending on the licence category you choose, you may acquire additional entitlements to the one you apply for.

You must send the completed D2 & D4 forms along with your photocard driving licence to: DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BR.

Whilst waiting for your licence to be returned, we will sign you up to our Online Theory Portal where you can practice your theories.

Once you have received your driving licence back with the provisional categories added we will be able to book your theory tests. There are three separate theory tests you need to take to become a HGV driver.

Multiple Choice:  You have 1 hour and 55 minutes to answer 100 multiple choice questions. The pass mark is 85 out of 100.

Hazard Perception:  You will watch 19 video clips of everyday road scenes, each containing at least one developing hazard. You only get one attempt at each clip and the pass mark is 67 out of 100.

Driver CPC Module 2: Includes 7 case studies of situations a HGV driver is likely to encounter. You will be asked 6-8 multiple choice questions on each case study. The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.

Once you have completed and passed all three theory tests, we will book in your driving tuition. This will be carried out over 5-10 days in 4-hour blocks depending on your course. We can also do some of your tuition over weekends if requested.

The test will last up to 30 minutes and includes:

  • An ‘S’ shaped reverse
  • Showing the uncoupling and coupling procedure (if taking your test with a trailer)

You must bring your driving licence and your theory test pass certificate with you.

After passing your 3A Off-Road test you will continue with your driving tuition, and your 3B On-Road Practical Driving Test will be scheduled for your final day of training.

The test lasts approximately 1 hour and will include:

  • 1 hour of driving
  • vehicle safety questions
  • 10 minutes of independent driving

You will pass your test if you make 12 or less driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

You must bring your 3A Off-Road Manoeuvres test pass certificate with you or your test will be cancelled by the DVSA.

You must pass Driver CPC Module 2 before you can complete this practical demonstration. This will be booked into your training schedule and your instructor will provide you with tuition beforehand.

The test is made up of 5 topics from the Driver CPC syllabus. You can score up to 20 points in each topic area and to pass you must score at  least 80 out of 100.

You must bring your Driver CPC Module 2 pass certificate with you on the date the demonstration is scheduled along with your driving licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers

We do not have access to any funding for HGV training however we do offer payment plans to help spread the cost.

Yes, after changes made by the UK government on the 15th November 2021, you can now take your test C+E without passing a category C test and gain both category C and C+E. If you are going direct from car to C+E with us, you will spend up to 12 hours in a category C vehicle as part of your course before driving a C+E vehicle.

To obtain your HGV provisional licence, you must attend a driver medical. A driver medical includes an eyesight test using a Snellen chart, blood pressure checks to ensure your BP meets DVLA criteria and a questionnaire regarding your medical history. The doctor will complete your full D4 medical form based on results and answers you provide during the examination. The whole process of carrying out a HGV medical should usually take around 10-20 minutes but this does depend on your health and medical history.

If you are wanting to become a HGV driver for a living, you will need Driver CPC. As a driver new to HGV driving, this will consist of two parts: Driver CPC Module 2 Case Studies, Driver CPC Module 4 Practical Demonstration. Once you have passed this, you will need to undertake 35 hours of training every 5 years to stay qualified and road legal.

We currently do not offer finance packages for HGV training. Alternatively, we offer customers the option to make part payments towards their invoice. No catch! – all we ask is that payment is made in full three weeks before you begin the practical driving element of your training. To secure your training with us we would only require a non-refundable booking fee of £350.00.

Category C

Category C (or Class 2, as they are otherwise known) allows drivers to drive vehicles over 3.5tonnes (not exceeding 32 tones). This can often be referred to as a ‘rigid’ truck with the cab and trailer permanently fixed together. These types of vehicles are commonly used to complete more local deliveries. Those new to HGV driving and choosing to go direct from car to C+E will undertake up to 12 hours in this vehicle type before progressing to C+E.

Category C+E

Category C+E (also known as Class 1), is the most comprehensive licence you can hold, allowing drivers to drive and handle a vehicle weighing over 3,500kg with a detachable trailer. There are two types of C+E vehicles which you will be able to drive upon passing this test:

  • Drawbar: Often referred to as ‘Wagon & Drag’. This is a combination of a rigid truck with a trailer.
  • Fully Articulated: Commonly known as an ‘Artic’ and consists of a tractor unit and long trailer. These are the most common C+E vehicle you will see on the roads today and what you will be driving when undertaking training with us.
